The production of forms is considered to be one of the most advanced fields in the field of CNC machining. Making a precise mold that meets the high requirements of the current industry requires high qualifications and advanced technologies. Mold machining is a very complex process in which each stage is of great importance from the design itself to the last finishing operations .

At the stage of designing molds, designers must take into account technological possibilities so that the effect of their work can physically be created. The next stage is to prepare the mold for production, starting from selecting appropriate technological processes, also taking into account heat treatment, through the selection of machines, tools and semi-finished product, to providing appropriate cutting parameters. When selecting the above components, it is necessary to take into account the type of material from which the mold is produced and its hardness at various stages of the manufacturing process.

CNC mold processing stages

Depending on the advancement of the mold, the machining is divided into several stages. One of them is the production of the so-called hole” – these are the elements of the mold responsible for its mounting, positioning, material supply and mold cooling. Contrary to appearances, performing this stage is not easy. We often deal with materials that are difficult to cut, while the tolerances imposed by the designers are high. The properties responsible for mold cooling also cause a lot of problems, because these are usually deep holes that require special tools, such as single-bit drills. The next stage is the destructive machining of the forming space. Using classic machining strategies, this stage usually took a lot of time, which generated cash. Currently, we use HSM paths for roughing, e.g. VoluMILL. These strategies are based on the trochoidal path geometry, which allows for much better conditions in the cutting zone, and therefore the use of very high parameters. Thanks to this type of machining, we save time and money.

The last and most important stage is reproduction of the forming surface. This stage must be performed accurately and precisely, because the quality of the obtained product depends on it. At this stage, the tools used and the parameters selected for them are very important. It is important not to forget to use the right machine, which will allow you to achieve the planned quality. The last stage is burdened with great responsibility, because any error at this stage can cause irreversible damage, and consequently loss of the amount of invested time and money, because the previous stages have already been completed.
