CNC ALUMINUM MACHINING

Milling services for one of the most popular materials, aluminum

ALUMINUM MILLING

In industry, in addition to steel, aluminum and its alloys are very widely used. As a construction material, it is very often used when we need to obtain lightweight but still durable structures. Of course, depending on the type of material, their purpose will be different, nevertheless aluminum alloys play a significant role in creating various types of structures and details. One way to obtain the desired shape of the product is its CNC machining through milling.

CNC aluminum alloys

Machining of aluminum alloys requires the use of appropriate cutting conditions and tools, because the material is highly flexible. Depending on the alloy additives, the machinability of the material will be different, which should be taken into account when creating the machining technology. Aluminum milling takes place at relatively high rotational speeds and feeds. Of course, the selection of these parameters is influenced by a number of factors, not only the type of alloy and tool, but also the power of the machine, the method of fastening the part and the tool.

What should you pay attention to when milling aluminum?

When machining soft alloys, attention must be paid to the phenomenon of the formation of a build-up on the tool edge. This phenomenon has a negative impact on the tool life and the quality of the machined surface. It is most often caused by too low cutting parameters. When selecting them, data from tool catalogs should be used, and the knowledge of an experienced technologist or operator will also be invaluable.

One of the methods of machining aluminum alloys is high-speed machining using Volumill technology. Thanks to the shape of the paths generated by CAM software (such as Solidworks CAM or CAMWorks), we use the working length of the tool to the maximum extent, while taking care of the even load, as well as the removal of chips and heat. This method of work contributes to the extension of the tool life and a significant reduction of the machining time.
