THREADS, HOLES CNC

Precision milling of threads and holes in steel, aluminum and other materials

CNC THREAD AND HOLE MILLING

Milling holes is the most common way to obtain a hole of a given diameter when we do not have the appropriate drill. It is also a simple method to obtain a hole while maintaining the required geometric parameters of the hole. Milling holes can be done in several ways. One of them is to create a preliminary hole using drill, and then increasing its diameter using a milling cutter moving in a spiral or helix.

An essential element of machining is also the production of threads. A thread is a groove of a specific geometry made on a cylindrical surface along a helical line. The combination of an internal and external thread of the same size and geometry creates a screw connection in which the rotational movement of one of the elements causes its linear displacement. Threads can be classified in terms of many factors, e.g. .in terms of location: internal and external, in terms of direction of operation: right and left, in terms of outline, among others. triangular, trapezoidal, round, due to standardization: metric, inch

Milling threads, holes

The most commonly used method of milling holes is the method in which the cutter is guided along a helix. The surface of the hole made in this way is sufficient for non-cooperating holes. At the same time, it is necessary to take care of the appropriate processing parameters adapted to the material being processed, the appropriate selection of the tool, the geometry of which will be adapted to the programmed angle of descent, and also the appropriate, fairly intensive cooling, which will enable efficient removal of chips from the processing zone. In the case of holes with very high geometric and surface requirements, the best method is to use a boring bar.

What are the most common methods for making threads?

Threading is most often done using a tap (internal) or a die (external). This is a tool that accurately reproduces the thread profile. Using this method requires appropriate synchronization of the feed and RPM values. The CNC machine independently determines the feed to the tool’s rotational speed, taking into account the thread pitch. Threads can also be made using milling, using a special thread milling cutter (with a single or multiple blade). In this method, the tool moves around its own axis and along a helical line. This method can be used to make both internal and external threads.

Another method for making a thread is embossing. The thread is cold formed without the formation of chips. This is used for softer materials. The thread obtained in this way has twice the load-bearing capacity, but has certain limitations, such as the possibility of making only on precision machines, the higher cost of thread formers and the ban on their use in the food industry, due to the possibility of creating pockets on the tops of the edges of the inner diameter, in which residues could accumulate, even leading to contamination. In all of the above-mentioned methods, previous preparation of the cylindrical surface of the hole or plug with a specific geometry is also required, depending on the thread being made.
