CAMWorks

CAMWorks, the well-known and highly regarded CAM programme for cnc machining, is the first CAM system fully integrated with SOLIDWORKS and the first Gold Partner and CAM Partner of SOLIDWORKS. It was the first application to propose and introduce so-called Knowledge Based Machining. The programme allows the development and simulation of a complete workpiece manufacturing process on CNC machines.

Thanks to the advanced geometry recognition functions and the Knowledge Base, the process is very fast. Due to the modular structure of the programme, each company can configure a package to suit its needs. CAMWorks – solution description

Increase processing efficiency

CAMWorks is state-of-the-art CAM software that enables fast and professional programming of CNC machines. The application uses the interface of SOLIDWORKS, the world’s most popular and powerful 3D design software. Toolpaths are created directly on CAD models, eliminating the risk of conversion errors. In addition, any change in model geometry automatically updates the toolpaths. CAMWorks, the market leader in CNC software, offers the following modules:

  • 2.5 axis milling
  • Advanced 3-axis milling
  • Multi-axis milling (4 and 5 axes)
  • 2- and 4-axis turning
  • Turning with milling
  • Advanced turning with milling
  • Wire EDM
  • Virtual machine
  • Nesting
  • HSM VoluMILL machining

The CAMWorks properties and process operations panel is integrated into the SOLIDWORKS window, allowing programming directly on models created in SOLIDWORKS. CAMWorks does not require a separate application window, eliminating the need to transfer files and the associated risks. No model conversion means no errors due to differences between the CAD model and the solid opened in CAM.

CAMWorks uses advanced algorithms to automatically identify technological features in the model (such as pockets, slots, holes) and generate toolpaths. The technology also works on solids imported from other CAD systems that have no ‘history’. As a result, more can be programmed in less time. Of course, it is always possible to enter machining parameters manually.

CAMWorks enables computer simulation of the machining process, including analysis of the machined solid for dimensional compatibility with the CAD design and detection of possible collisions (3D machine model). This works practically like a lathe simulator, allowing significant savings already at the design stage.

The intelligence of CAMWorks is based on a real database, containing full information about the machines you have, the tools available and the possible speeds and feeds. With this open solution, the programme learns to automatically generate machining strategies for specific workpieces. This knowledge can be reused many times in the future, leading to significant time savings.

CAMWorks benefits

Toolpaths are created directly on the CAD models, eliminating the need for risky conversions. In addition, any modification to the model geometry automatically updates the toolpaths.

Full 5-axis operation

CAMWORKS can develop optimised technology for CNC machines and our CAM implementation team will prepare dedicated post-processors tailored to specific machines.

Knowledge Based Machining

CAMWORKS can develop optimised technology for CNC machines and our CAM implementation team will prepare dedicated machine-specific post-processors.

Gold Partner SOLIDWORKS

CAMWORKS is the first CAM system fully integrated with SOLIDWORKS and the first ‘Gold’ and ‘CAM’ Partner. Users of this software can take full advantage of the benefits of full integration with SOLIDWORKS.

Selected program functions

Toolkit tree

The tool tree facilitates the creation of tools and their storage, allows easier management of the tool library and operations for these tools.

5-axis drilling

Drilling, drilling and reaming operations for complex components machined in 4 and 5 axes.

Barrel drilling

New barrel drilling cycles enabling deep hole drilling with barrel drills.

Control of the B-axis

For multi-tasking lathes with a milling option, the possibility of specifying a fixed B axis value for the tool and chuck provides better control of milling. In addition, it is possible to convert a traditional path for finishing longitudinal turning into a programme in which the lathe tool can be tilted freely, taking full advantage of the machine's kinematic possibilities.

Tool selection filter

Simplified interface, one dialog box with an always up-to-date tool list together with a geometry preview of the selected tool.

VoluMILL technology

Using the VoluMill strategy, much faster and much deeper machining can be carried out than with standard milling strategies. The HSM and VoluMill strategies are an approach to machining that drastically reduces the cycle time of the operation and, with this strategy, the life of the machining tool and the machine itself is extended.

Property recognition

Highly efficient automatic property recognition also for multi-level pockets.

Edit default strategies

Access to strategy parameters with direct editing in the CAMWorks window.

Entry and withdrawal

Addition of an entry and withdrawal motion for milling operations on the lathe.

Technology verification

Verification of the machining technology prepared in CAMWorks by personnel in production, directly at the machine.

Synchronisation manager

Programming of turning and milling technology with several tool heads and simultaneous machining using the main spindle and sub-spindle. Collision-free synchronous operation of multi-spindle machines.

Machining of assemblies in turning

Possibility of preparing roughing and finishing technology for prefabricated parts with asymmetrical shapes that require dedicated fixtures on turning and milling centres.

Probe handling

Programmable probing cycles to improve the verification of machined parts. Probing operations maximise the productivity, quality and accuracy of the machining performed on CNC centres.

Prime Turning

The possibility of implementing a longitudinal turning strategy using an innovative solution from Sandvik Coromant. During machining, the tool plunges into the material at the workpiece holder and removes material in the opposite direction, from the holder to the face of the workpiece.

Machining taking into account tolerances

Automatically detect dimensional tolerances contained in SOLIDWORKS part models and assign appropriate machining strategies to achieve the intended manufacturing accuracy.

Handling of milling cutters barrel milling cutters

Ability to develop finishing strategies using spherical milling cutters with a variable cutting edge shape. Dynamic control of the point of contact between the barrel tool on the cutting edge and the workpiece allows for efficient machining and highly accurate surfaces.

CAMWorks modules

Milling 2.5 axes

The 2.5-axis milling module allows the automatic recognition of properties, i.e. planning, roughing and its strategies, contouring, drilling operations and threading. Using this module, we can take into account residual machining, HSM settings. We have ensured that the technology is fully linked to the model. Changing the geometry = technology update; in addition, all data is stored in a SOLIDWORKS file. The 2.5-axis milling module also provides a 4th and 5th axis indexing function. This can be used in the parts module as well as in SOLIDWORKS assemblies.

3-axis milling

When you choose the 3-axis milling module, you are given a wide selection of operations and settings for the created paths. Depending on the type of machined surface, whether concave or convex, more or less complex, we can choose from many types of operations and settings of their corresponding parameters, which will result in a path in accordance with our expectations. Thanks to modern software solutions such as the process manager, the time for generating very complex paths can be used for other technology definition activities. In practice, the paths are calculated in the background, while we can continue to work in the programme.

Multi-axis milling

The multi-axis milling module is dedicated to milling problems requiring more than three numerical axes. The paths created in this module make it possible to obtain complex surfaces faster and more accurately, often those that are not possible in the 3-axis module. Here, we could mention items such as rotor blades, for which we can find special settings in CAMWorks, machining of deep sockets at an angle, notches wound on a shaft, any subject in which we care for an appropriate tool guidance depending on the surface to be machined (tool contact point, tool inclination), the multi-axis module will be the right choice.

Turning | Milling with turning

Milling with turning is a module dedicated to lathes, lathes with a milling option and multi-tasking machining machines in general. It allows us to prepare a programme for a lathe with a milling option, taking into account additional functions such as starting the bar feeder, workpiece capture (sub-spindle), tailstock retraction, etc. To a certain extent, the module allows us to obtain a programme in the form of a cycle record. To a certain extent, the module allows us to receive the programme in the form of a cycle record. This form of recording facilitates the operator's work and improves communication with the machine. An additional improvement for the technologist will be the module enabling the recognition of the turned profile, which will reduce the time of defining the programme.

Cutting out EMD

The EDM electro hollowing module has been designed and developed for two- and four-axis machines. Using this module, we are able to automatically prepare the wire path and generate the correct G-code for the corresponding machine. The module also provides automatic recognition of the parts to be cut in the two-axis range and, in the case of four-axis issues, automatically synchronises the curves. We only need any geometry for this module to work, no history of operations is required.

HSM VoluMILL processing

The VoluMILL module allows you to generate efficient machining programmes for 2.5 axis milling and 3D surface machining. Using HSM machining with VoluMILL, you will reduce machining time by up to 80%, significantly reduce tool wear (5 times longer), and ensure optimum transitions without unnecessary rapid changes in tool direction. Feed rates and speeds will be automatically changed during tooling. The module is best suited to topics where a large volume of material needs to be picked up in a short period of time.

Virtual machine

CAMWorks is equipped with a realistic NC code simulator, based on the Eureka solution from the Italian company Roboris. The simulator allows very precise verification of the NC code and its optimisation. We can take compensation/tool wear into account. During the simulation, we have the possibility to edit the simulated code, thus eliminating errors that would result in a collision on the machine. The solution is available in three packages and supports multi-tasking machine tools (e.g.: two-spindle lathes, mill-turn machines with multi-axis heads).

Nesting

Manufacturer Geometric has provided its customers with a solution for optimal nesting of an element in the area of a selected sheet, e.g. sheet metal. The module uses a ready-made element prepared in SOLIDWORKS and an assembly in which the optimum positioning of the element is presented. The tool is fully automatic, simply select the detail, specify the necessary parameters, e.g. quantity, and activate the solver. The results can be saved to a DWG/DXF file.

CAMWorks Shop Floor

CAMWORKS is equipped with an add-on that enables a seamless flow of information between the CAM technology department and manufacturing. The application, which is a module in the CAMWorks software suite, is fully integrated with SOLIDWORKS and CAMWORKS. The target user group for the CAMWorks Shop Floor application is production staff working directly on the machines. The tool, by providing the machining project prepared for the part model, allows the operator to obtain information about the position of the zero point of the coordinate system on the workpiece, the dimensions of the blank, the tool magazine used to carry out the machining, The programme allows path-by-path verification of the G-code generated by the technologist and processed by the post-processor for the relevant machine. Preview of the setup sheet prepared automatically for the machining project developed. The sheet includes views of the model, toolpaths, parameters and execution time of machining operations.
